Since its creation, NepTech has been committed to revolutionizing maritime transport by offering innovative low-carbon solutions. Recently, two electric shuttles designed by NepTech joined the fleet of the Compagnie Maritime de Transport des Sables d’Olonne. Named Le Noroît and Le Suroît, they embody the shared commitment of both parties to more sustainable mobility.

In this interview, Hervé Rivallin, Director of the Compagnie Maritime de Transport de l’Agglomération des Sables d’Olonne, shares his experience and insights on this ambitious project carried out in partnership with NepTech.

A project aligned with a long-term strategy

The acquisition of these electric shuttles is part of a transition strategy initiated several years ago. Hervé Rivallin explains: “The decision to switch to electric propulsion for our ferries dates back to 2012, and these new shuttles continue that trajectory. The main motivations for going electric are environmental concerns, noise reduction (for crew members, passengers, and local residents), and the elimination of exhaust fumes. The comfort of electric navigation is highly appreciated.”

While Les Sables d’Olonne has been operating electric shuttles for over a decade, the local authorities sought to renew and modernize their fleet with two new units “as part of a public tender launched at the beginning of 2023.” NepTech won the contract alongside its partners Chantier de l’Arsenal and Alternatives Energies.
“The new ferries, Le Noroît and Le Suroît, are larger and more spacious than the previous generation. These electric shuttles are also very aesthetically pleasing.”

A successfully met challenge:
delivery before the Vendée Globe

Les Sables d’Olonne, famous for hosting the start of the Vendée Globe, had a strict timeline. Hervé Rivallin highlights the main challenge:
“The biggest challenge was receiving the shuttles before the crucial opening date of the Village for the 10th Vendée Globe. The shuttles were delivered on time, and the challenge was successfully met.”

For NepTech, this project was also an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to manage tight deadlines without compromising quality. The new shuttles began operating during the event, proving their reliability and performance.

A well-launched service designed for the future

Since their delivery in October 2024, the electric shuttles have been transporting both residents and the many tourists who came to witness the Vendée Globe departure. For locals, waterborne transport within Les Sables d’Olonne is already a well-established habit.

“We currently operate a fleet of six maritime ferries providing two main services:

  • Line A, connecting the port between Les Sables (Quai René Guiné) and La Chaume (Quai George V)
  • The Sea Bus, linking Ponton K-Bis (Place du Vendée Globe) to Quai René Guiné.”*

Hervé Rivallin is already pleased with the initial user feedback, which he finds encouraging: “The first reactions from passengers are already positive.” However, he notes that a full analysis will be conducted “after a complete year of operation.”

These reviews could be even more favorable considering that the vessels’ propulsion system was designed to be adaptable. “The addition of a hydrogen range extender (fuel cell system) is still under consideration,” Rivallin reminds us.

For NepTech, this ambition reflects a shared vision: developing ever more innovative and sustainable transport solutions.
