Analyse de cycle de vie ACV navire électrique

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an essential tool for assessing and reducing the environmental impact of vessels. At NepTech, this approach is at the heart of the design of sustainable vessels, enabling a precise assessment of their footprint at every stage of their life cycle.

By integrating LCA, NepTech is fully involved in the ecological transition of the maritime and river sectors, notably through a collaboration with EDF and ENSAM as part of a tripartite thesis on quantifying the environmental impact of the propulsion system of electro-hydrogen vessels.

Essential collaboration with EDF and ENSAM

In order to optimize the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to ships, NepTech has joined forces with EDF and ENSAM in a joint thesis led by Paul Mosser. NepTech, a specialist in sustainable vessel design, offers its technical expertise in naval design, integration of low-carbon propulsion systems and maritime innovations. EIFER (European Institute of Energy Research), a joint laboratory based in Germany between EDF and the University of Karlsruhe, is making a major contribution to the project with its technical expertise in energy and decarbonization. The Laboratoire d’Ingénierie des Systèmes Physiques et Numériques (LISPEN) at ENSAM, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers, provides academic supervision and thesis direction, bringing essential scientific rigor and skills. Together, the partners form a comprehensive alliance, combining academic mastery with complementary technical expertise in naval design, decarbonization and energy management/sizing.

This research focuses on the study of electro-hydrogen propulsion vessels, using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The objective is clear: to quantify the environmental impact of these vessels and identify hybridization solutions that will maximize their energy efficiency while minimizing their ecological footprint.

The PhD student, Paul Mosser, a graduate of ENSAM’s engineering program, has been working on this thesis topic for three years from the beginning of 2022, in the LISPEN laboratory in Aix-en-Provence, the EIFER laboratory in Karlsruhe and the NepTech laboratory in Aix-en-Provence.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): a decisive tool for NepTech

NepTech uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a real decision-making tool. Why is this approach essential ? This methodology enables the global assessment of a vessel’s environmental footprint from design to recycling, taking into account emissions, energy consumption and resource use. LCA guides NepTech in the development of solutions that are truly adapted to the challenges of the energy transition.

Based on LCA, NepTech takes a rigorous, scientific approach to reducing the emissions and energy impact of its vessels. This analysis helps us to make informed decisions and propose innovative and sustainable solutions.

LCA: an indispensable tool for meeting the challenges of ecological transition

NepTech is convinced that technological innovation, coupled with a rigorous LCA approach, is the key to achieving this goal. Thanks to this collaboration with EDF and ENSAM, NepTech is paving the way for a new generation of vessels combining sustainability, performance and innovation.
